Another ambassador of the Alumni League, Tyreek Graves has been around for it all. From his early days at Strawberry Mansion to his travels across international courts, and finally his return to his roots in Philly, Graves embodies the spirit of what the Alumni League represents.
Graves' journey began when an old friend, affectionately referred to as Shocky, approached him with an opportunity that would significantly shape his basketball journey: a chance to play for the Alumni League's Strawberry Mansion team. This invitation wasn't just about rejoining former teammates; it was a homecoming, a chance to put on the Mansion jersey and represent his school one more time on the court. This represented the re-ignition of his high school glory days, the revival of memories etched on the hardwood of Philly's basketball courts, and the connection to a community that had given him so much.
"I played basketball all over the city, went semi-pro, journeyed to places like West Texas, even toured China a couple of times," Graves reflected on his time prior to joining the Alumni League. His travels, each with unique challenges, were instrumental in shaping his resilience, a trait that would become invaluable in his future endeavors.
It was the pull of brotherhood and local pride that brought him back to Philadelphia. Joining the league meant more than just playing basketball, it was about rekindling old bonds and forming new ones, it was about leading and learning. The Alumni League wasn't merely a platform for Graves to showcase his skills, it was a community where his role evolved from a player to a mentor and leader. In this league, he found his calling, guiding young players, and sometimes, learning from them.
"I just try to help out any way possible," he said, highlighting his commitment to guiding new talent and enriching the league as a whole. "If I can teach or help out a couple of players along the way, that's a bonus."
Commenting on the league's progression, Graves has nothing but admiration for the direction Fahreed has steered it in.
"Fah [Fahreed] is doing one hell of a job," he stated. "Making the league bigger and better each season, adding new things to it, and the level of play is getting more and more competitive. It's one of the best leagues in the city, in my opinion."
But life, especially for Tyreek Graves, always necessitates change. Graves' journey through different teams mirrors this as after starting with Strawberry Mansion, Graves moved over to the Delaware Sharks and after that Hush University. While these kinds of transitions might be a challenge to some, this isn't the case for Graves. Each move was a new chapter, filled with unique challenges and opportunities, contributing to his personal and professional growth. There was success early on as Graves won two titles during the Alumni League's infancy and then made an appearance in Hush's Season 12 title game against Lincoln but lost.
"Playing with my team in other leagues is easy; we know each other's games. But at this point in our lives, we're getting older, and now it’s more like a young league," he chuckled.
When asked about which of the seasons in his illustrious season stands out the most, the answer was simple: the next one.
"It’s going to be this season coming up because it’s my last season, and I’m not playing in any other leagues but this one. I’m locked in," Graves asserted this with determination, the fire of competition still burning brightly in his eyes, reflecting his unwavering focus.
Central to his journey is Jimmie Greeno, a figure who's been much more than just a teammate, but a coach, mentor, and lifelong friend.
"He’s been with me every step of the way in this. From a coach to a teammate, he’s always been by my side," Graves said, highlighting the kind of relationships that basketball, and more specifically, the Alumni League lives on.
Tyreek Graves' story is a stirring reminder of what the Alumni League is truly about. It's more than a competition — it's a family, a brotherhood, and for many like Graves, it's a significant chapter in their lives they will always cherish. As he prepares for his final season, the legacy he leaves behind is untouchable, not just as a player, but as a leader, mentor, and emblematic figure of the Alumni League's heart and soul.
